First Holy Communion

The First Holy Communion classes are for children who are baptized members of All Saints’ church and typically include children in the 2nd and 3rd grades. The classes are taught during the Sunday School hour with sign-ups in August at the beginning of the academic year. The service is held in late October or early November.

The purpose of the classes is to help the children deepen their faith in Christ through learning about the Lord's Supper and the meaning of communion in the Church. They take a tour of the church, receive instruction from a member of the Altar Guild, and spend one Sunday visiting the vesting rooms learning about the different types and colors of vestments. They also receive an introduction to the Book of Common Prayer and learn some of the traditional etiquette of the church, such as making the sign of the cross, bowing, and kneeling at appropriate times. The class is taught by Verger Stacey Murphy.

When the children take their First Holy Communion, girls are asked to wear a white dress and white shoes - a veil is optional. Boys are asked to wear white shirts, khaki slacks and a conservative tie - a jacket is optional.

Parents are asked to attend the last class, which meets in the church. At that class, the families are instructed on the details of the First Holy Communion service and the children rehearse processing in and out of the church.

The service is held in the fall each year at an 8:50 a.m. service. Following the First Holy Communion service there is a time for taking photos and to present certificates.
